Previously, in Trip's Life...

31 May 2009 - Sunday

Work: Hey, wow, gcc finally compiled! And now I can compile mysql! Maybe this will get it to work with ruby!

Gaming: Deeper into the pits of doom! After last session's zombie pit, we found the ooze pit (ochre jelly and gelatinous cube), ran out of healing surges, came back the next day, followed the secret underwater passage, and came up in the throne room of some elf calling himself Abeya and lording it over... elfinized goblins? elf/goblin crossbreeds? He recognized Resi's voice, but although we've heard of him, we have no recollection of having met him.

Food: Burritos, which are not like yodelling! Let's hear it for Ken!

Work: Submit to my will, gcc!

Visual Entertainments: Finished first disc of Shuffle. The hero is slightly less bland than most harem/dating-sim heroes, at least.

Cats: Twelve adorable paws!

Work: Recruiters talked to even though they won't hire me because I suck and have no skills and haven't created any new open-source operating systems while out of work: 1.

Visual Entertainments: Started the first disc of Shuffle. Enh.

Work: Marith is teh w1nz0r!

Visual Entertainments: Ayse and her fish have to go to bed early, so we couldn't actually watch all of The Prestige with Earl and Cat, but we watched The Pre! Next fortnight, Stige!

26 May 2009 - Tuesday

Work: FAIL.

Visual Entertainments:

  • Kurau Phantom Memory 3: Bending the spaceship in half might have been a little indiscreet.
  • Code Geass 4-5: Yay angst! Also, green-haired DOOOOM!
  • Avatar 8: Evil really doesn't encourage introspection or self-improvement.
  • Bleach 132-133: Oh, right, Ichigo's little sister should join Orihime and Yoruichi in fixing the plot.

Food: I failed to eat all day and ended up having to make chicken strips with Thai green curry glop at 23:00 or DIE. This was probably poor planning.

Cats: Aw, Aspen and Marmalade were lying all tangled together with feet over each other!

Gaming: NPCs are hard, especially evil but not necessarily hostile NPCs. Somehow we got to the actually hostile NPCs, (who got schooled because they are not PCs and also I suck at tactics) who obligingly showed the PCs to a twisty maze of underground passage full of centipedes and midget beholders. The centipedes had a weakening attack, so the battle dragged on and on and Earl had to leave, but eventually evil was put to flight and its stuff seized. Jeremy's character got all the good stuff, but there will be more stuff later.

Food: Ken was at a gaming con all day and most of tonight, so Ayse lured Dave, Marith, and I to have Thai City dinner with her. Food! Conversation! Hugs! Victory!

Cats: Twelve fluffy paws! And I petted Jinian when I visited, so she purred extensively and emitted large quantities of fur!

Work: Inevitable rejections: 1.

Gaming: Marith convinced me my plan was wrong, so I have a different plan for Sunday. Muahahahaha, or something.

Visual Entertainments: Third disc of Hikaru no Go. Additional drama!

Cats: Live Siamese kitty Aspen hiding behind giant plush Siamese kitty Violetta and peeking out with her big blue eyes is superadorable!

Work: Started trying to get a recent ruby and MySQL and stuff on spore so I can practice with rails.

Gaming: Ayse and Ken are off having a wedding anniversary, so no Earthdawn for us!

19 May 2009 - Tuesday

Work: Checked the usual sources for new job postings, but FAIL.

Gaming: Bought the 4th ed Monster Manual 2. Read the 4th ed Monster Manual 2. Mmm, monsters. I was afraid it would be like the later 3rd ed MMs with only high-level monsters that I would never get to use, but it's not that bad. There is plenty I can use to oppress my players muahahahahahaha!

Visual Entertainments:

  • Kurau Phantom Memory 1-2: Sniff, Marith is not fangirling it!
  • Code Geass 3: It's not high school without sexual harrassment!
  • Avatar 6-7: If the old guy ever gets on board with Prince Z's plan, the protagonists are going to be in a lot of trouble.
  • Bleach 131: Yay that subplot is finally done! Maybe now we can get back to Orihime gaining all power.

Cats: Twelve paws of adorability!

Monster Manual by Jeremy (Wed May 20 18:23:34 2009)

May Roger have a pseudo-dragon familiar?

Re: Monster Manual by Trip (Wed May 20 19:44:59 2009)

The closest thing in the familiar list is "dragonling", but Roger would have to spend a feat to multiclass into something arcane before he could spend a feat to get a familiar. However, if he just wants a pet, that doesn't require any feats at all!

Re: Monster Manual by Jeremy (Fri May 22 21:57:32 2009)

I was just being munchkinish in honor of the new MM2. Roger is more likely to want a sidekick or squire than some flying lizard.

Re: Monster Manual by Trip (Sat May 23 11:20:50 2009)

Oh, well, that's okay then. 4th ed is not big on players having extra units to control, though; even with beastmaster rangers and summoner wizards, you generally only get to have one or the other do something in each round.

Maybe you can persuade Naled to multiclass to fighter!

Work: Resumes sent to places that would never in a million years hire me but might derive some small amount of entertainment from them: 5.

Visual Entertainments: There isn't a new slot at Tuesday Night Anime for months, so I broke down and watched the first two episodes of Princess Resurrection because I like the manga so much. It is not terribly different! They changed the special effect of one thing, and I think the new visual is less cool, but I can live with it. Oh, and they changed "hooba" to "huga" in the subtitles. I can also live with this.

Thermions: DO NOT WANT.

Food: It was hot, so we tried to have sushi, but the sushi place was closed so we had to go to another sushi place but the bad review Ken had read of it preyed on his mind so we had to abort and seek sushi in downtown Mountain View. Finally, sushi! And cold soba! And liters of ice water!

Gaming: After the Terrible Saga of Sushi, we only had a couple of hours to game before bedtime for Ayses, but we beat up some zombies and a trap haunt (which the people with real attacks took down before Lycoris could recite any prayers over its body), got some lewts, and hardly died at all.

Visual Entertainments: Finally got the boxed set of Kurau Phantom Memory from Carl, so I can start showing it this week at Tuesday Night Anime!

Cats: The cats were lethargic, but they each staked out a spot with something cool to lie on and maybe a breeze and seemed okay.

Work: Jobs that could be either sweet or horrible applied for: 1.

Visual Entertainments: There are some parts of Mulholland Drive that make sense locally, but the work overall... not so much. In fact, I think it may make negative sense.

Silly Computer Games: Sudoku window still closed!

Cats: The Red Spot of Uncatchability lured Marmalade the length of the hall about three times, but Aspen trotted after it ten or a dozen times!

15 May 2009 - Friday

Work: Organizations on this planet who want to hire me: 0.

Visual Entertainments: Episodes 9-12 of Hyper Police, because I wanted something mindless. Also, with big explosions.

Silly Computer Games: Finally managed to close the sudoku window!

Cats: I need to figure out how to entertain Marmalade and make him feel more appreciated. Ghirardelli seeks me out and demands the attention, so he gets the attention while Marmalade sleeps on the bed and doesn't get the attention. I am a terrible cat-dad!

14 May 2009 - Thursday

Work: Jobs applied for: 1. But Marith had an interview that went well!

Visual Entertainments: Second disc of The Wallflower, which is still very silly but could possibly use more of a plot arc.

Food: Ayse lured me to Thai City for lunch, and I introduced her to Three Season Pork, which people from our planet like.

Cats: Ghirardelli's fur is still almost mat-free! Plushy kitty!

Work: FAIL.

Visual Entertainments: Ken and Ayse were dead, so Marith, Dave, and I had to entertain Cat and Earl all by ourselves! We did this by watching the last episode of xxxHolic, and the first episode of Life on Mars (British version).

You know, the past was really kind of awful.

Cats: When I held very still, Maddie came and sat on me and purred for a few minutes, so I guess she only mostly hates me, instead of completely hating me.

Work: FAIL.

Visual Entertainments:

  • Code Geass 1-2: Oh the alternate-history doom!
  • Avatar 5: PCs should use more disguises.
  • Black Lagoon 23-24: That went about as well as could be expected. Also, the end!
  • Bleach 130: Still an idiot plot.

Cats: I have got most of the mats out of Ghirardelli's fur, and he is SO SOFT!

Gaming: As is usual for the day after running a game, I am full of ideas that will all be gone by next session. It's too bad all my friends have lives so we can't game weekly.

10 May 2009 - Sunday

Gaming: I wasn't really prepared, but I had the Monster Manual and also some orcs, so it turned out okay in the end. Rachel's character has been mistaken for some sort of infernal monstrosity, and the orcs think Earl's character is female, so next session will no doubt be amusing.

Lesson learned: give PCs something to argue about in character, even if it's just whether to hike along the ridgeline or down in the swamp.

Random Encounters: Jeremy's little sister tried to crush me with a door.

Visual Entertainments: Finished the disc of The Wallflower. Aw chibi-Sunako!

Food: Jeremy has blasphemously combined ginger snaps and chocolate chip cookies!

Silly Computer Games: Blargh sudoku blargh.

Cats: I think the brushing is making Ghirardelli's fur less mattastic, but getting brushed when your fur is full of mats is no fun.

Infernal Monstrosities by Rachel (Mon May 11 11:42:20 2009)

Rachel's character IS an infernal monstrosity, and proud of it! No comment about Earl's character, though.

Work: I successfully made it to the interview, even though it was a 40-minute walk past the far end of the light rail system. After all that trundling, it was kind of a short interview, but they inspected my technical sk1llz and were nice about my melting into a little pool of sweat in the middle of their conference room. Then I trundled all the way back. Dead now.

Work: FAIL.

Gaming: Earthdawn! Someone is messing with the PCs by sending them cryptic and confusing letters, but it's probably someone too big to beat up. Onward to Throal!

Food: Home-made guacamole on tortilla chips! Also, left-over quesadilla!

Cats: Ghirardelli had an exciting outdoors adventure when Marith and I had the door open to talk and he noticed a squirrel out there! Marith headed him off before he reached the foot of the stairs, though, and he was conveyed back to the indoors where there are no bugs, cars, or raccoons. (He was pretty flat and stiff when I picked him up, so I don't think he minded being returned too much. The outdoors is full of scents and things to chase, but it is also very large!)

5 May 2009 - Tuesday

Work: Recruiters extensively communicated with, with respect to a possible script weasel contract: 1. (I'd be an independent contractor weasel thing, but it would still beat being unemployed.)

Visual Entertainments:

  • Avatar 3-4: Poor Aang.
  • Bleach 129: Bah, idiot plot.
  • Kaleido Star II 25-26: Finale episode of triumph! Also, side episode about Rosetta (with Sora×Rosetta shipper video for opening credits).
  • Black Lagoon 22: This plot arc is going about as well as one might expect.

Random Encounters: Dr Jeremy, in the grocery store, with his offspring.

Gaming: Thrace! We went into the dungeon under the old cemetary hill and beat up undead until their gnollish master jumped down a well to escape, then went back and forbid anarchist cults from setting up shop in our town. Also there was some conflict over finances, but it was resolved amicably.

Four more encounters like the past two, and we can level!

Looking at the PHB2, strikers, defenders, and leaders all have class features that support their roles, but the new controller classes don't. Huh. Maybe wizards are just broken beyond hope and playing shows that I still suck completely.

Cats: Twelve paws of night-time scampering!

2 May 2009 - Saturday

HAPPY HAPPY AL-DAY!!

Gaming: 4th ed wizards need a class feature that supports their role, like every other class in the PHB has, but heck if I know what it should be.

Visual Entertainments: First disc of Air TV. It's slow-moving and mysterious, and appears to be based on a dating game or something.
