Previously, in Trip's Life...
31 July 2009 - Friday
Work: Jobs applied for: 1.
Visual Entertainments: Started the second disc of
Baccano!, which continues to be violent and alchemical.
Cats:
I tried threading a wire through the chicken wire and pulling it tight
to make the edge by the stupid STUPID light fixture creature less easy
to escape through, but I'm not sure how much it helped. Perhaps I just
need to layer it in duct tape until it's unappealing.
Sadly I do not have anything to stand on that is both tall enough to reach
the top of the opening to the next balcony and stable enough that I
wouldn't die. I must think, or else find a ladder to borrow.

30 July 2009 - Thursday
Work: FAIL.
Gaming: If I didn't suck, I could run things like
Lady
Blackbird, but as previously established, I can't run things like
that. Because I suck.
I guess I should work on D&D more now.
Cats:
I put up chicken wire across the front of the balcony, and used about a
jillion zipties to connect the top and bottom swatches. I still need to
put a few more nails in the top, put some chicken wire across the
opening to the next-door neighbors' balcony (which I have already seen
Marmalade eyeing and wiggling his butt at), and figure out something
better to do with the edge that has the stupid STUPID light fixture
creature.

29 July 2009 - Wednesday
Work: FAIL.
Gaming: No Earthdawn because Mike is dead from
work.
I really should prepare for D&D this weekend, or at least review what I
prepared previously, shouldn't I?
Visual Entertainments: Third and final disc of
Divergence Eve. I'm not sure how much sense that actually
made.
Cats:
Net change in paws: zero!

Work: Jobs applied for: 2. Rejections from last
week's interviews: 1.
Visual Entertainments:
- Kurau Phantom Memory 15: Meep.
- Code Geass 16-17: Okay, who didn't see that
coming?
- Avatar 1.20: Woo, mythic!
- Bleach 144-145: Well, yes, okay, but what about
Orihime? Who do you think we watch this show for?
Cats:
Twelve paws!

Visual Entertainments: Second disc of

Gilgamesh.

HAPPY HAPPY RACHEL-DAY!!
Food: Ayse and Ken bought me dim sum, because I am a
huge loser with no job. It was yummy, and Ayse found the Green Tea
Sesame Balls of legend!
Gaming: This fortnight in Thrace, our villains paid
hush money, reprogrammed an undead monstrosity, negotiated trade with the
orcs of the north pending the removal of the bandits, learned of the
impending (yet unscheduled) arrival of the creepy magical secret police,
and used Lycoris as a chew-toy for monsters while recovering a cache of
ancient petty funds from the undercity.
Level UP!
Cats:
Twelve paws!
Writing: Check, though I stayed up to all hours
flailing inefficiently at the computer.
Green Tea Sesame Balls of Legend! by Carl (Mon Jul 27 21:21:35 2009)
Dim Sum is much better with 3 than 2 because you can try more things. Did you get chicken feet?
The Green Tea Sesame Balls of Legend are AWESOME. Although probably other things are good to get too, perhaps even chicken feet.
Re: Green Tea Sesame Balls of Legend! by Trip (Mon Jul 27 21:52:13 2009)
We had five, because Marith and Dave were there too. They didn't buy me any dim sum, though.
There were no chicken feet, but there were slimy noodles with shrimp!
The GTSBoL were way too sweet for me, alas. Ayse had to eat my share.

Work: FAIL.
Visual Entertainments: Started the third disc of
The Wallflower. Sunako seems to spend most of her time in
chibi mode in these episodes. I'm not sure if that's progress or
not.

Work: Jobs applied for: 2. Recruiter guys talked to:
1. Reminders send to companies I interviewed at previously: 1.
Gaming: Sniff! It looks like Ptolus is cancelled for
this weekend, and since Ayse and Ken are about to have a kid, we might
not be able to schedule another session for a couple of years.
Visual Entertainments: Second episode of new
Doctor Who! Poor plumber! Poor tree!
Food: Ayse and Ken brought Thai food to Wednesday
Night Whatever, so we did not have to resort to cannibalism!
Cats:
Ghirardelli learned from Marmalade about the wonders of sleeping on top
of bookcases, and now apparently Marmalade has learned from Ghirardelli
how much fun it is to steal my computer chair. They're ganging up on me!
But Marmalade gave me extra snuggles at bedtime, so I forgive
him!
Aspen isn't ganging up on me, but I oppressed her with cuddles
anyway. Ha hah!

Work: Recruiter guys spoken to: 1.
Gaming: Weakly purchased Divine Power
for D&D4. The new avenger powers look pretty escalationy. I haven't
gotten to the others yet, but suspect similar.
Visual Entertainments: Dave is a Hero of the Anime
Revolution for successfully burning a DVD of Bleach!
- Kurau Phantom Memory 13-14: I don't think the GPO is
very well funded.
- Code Geass 15: Ooh, fiendish!
- Avatar 18-19: That's a cliff-hanger, all right!
- Bleach 143: Dooooooom!

Gaming: No PAD&D4, this time because of kids (I
think), and no surprise Thrace because Dave had something better to do.
Visual Entertainments: 6th and final disc of
Desert Punk. I don't know if it was a twist ending, but it
was certainly twisted!
Cats:

18 July 2009 - Saturday
Food: Greek picnic feast, since the play immediately
following was allegedly set in Athens. Ken provided dolmas, marinated
peppers, components for gyro-like pita sandwiches, more dolmas, and
something involving leeks, apples, and honey. Mike, Susan, and Erin brought
lemon-chicken soup, meatballs in some kind of red sauce, and the other
stuff I'm not remembering now. It was all good!
Theatrical Entertainments: Midsummer Night's
Dream by Festival
Theatre Ensemble in Los Gatos! It was pretty funny, although like all
community theatre it had a few weak spots.
Cats:
I took down the failed netting, but was too lazy to put up the chicken
wire. I did give Marmalade and Ghirardelli some balcony time, though,
even though I kept having to scoop them off the railing.

Work: FAIL.
Gaming: Our Earthdawn characters successfully
murdered an inoffensive old man lizard! My character,
at least, still thinks it was the right thing to have done even though
we failed to resuscitate him, but that doesn't mean she feels good about
it. No legend points for us!

14 July 2009 - Tuesday
Work: Phone interviews survived: 1. Meatspace
interviews scheduled for next Monday: 1. Morale: slightly improved.
Visual Entertainments: Yay Earl showed up! Neil
still spurns us like a mazurka, though.
- Kurau Phantom Memory 12: Apparently some parts of the
moon use a hex grid while others use a square grid.
- Code Geass 13-14: The GM will make you earn
those points you got for Secret ID, no matter how concealing of a mask
you wear.
- Avatar 17: I'm surprised the Fire Nation hadn't thought
of that earlier.
- Bleach 141-142: Poor Orihime.
Gaming: Earl showed off the cheat sheets he made for
the players in his streamlined Champions game. He's using 3d6+OCV vs
DCV+10, and attacks do a fixed amount of damage plus 1 or 2 per point by
which the roll succeeded. That's a little more arithmetic per attack than I
find ideal these days, but should be fine for his target audience.
Perhaps I should make with the brain-eating!
Cats:
Twelve paws covered in thermions!
Writing: FAIL. I have pretty much run out of the
easy stuff I was writing. Now I must think of something else to write.
Maybe even something with a plot.

13 July 2009 - Monday
Work: I talked to someone about reweaseling my meds,
which is like investing in future usefulness. Also, I responded to a
recruiter, although the position is suboptimal (far away, odd hours, a big
step backwards in pay).
Gaming: Game design is hard. When it results in a
crossbreed of D&D4 and Hero, it's also unsavory.
Visual Entertainments: Second disc of World of
Narue. Enh.
Cats:
Twelve paws!

12 July 2009 - Sunday
Gaming: At long last, Thrace! We finally talked to
the strange elf guy, identified his minions as fey creatures, received
the head of the gnoll who annoyed us earlier, and beat feet back to
town. Then there was excitement with the mayor's demonic servant, who
may turn out to be an undead servant after all. This is all going to end
in tears, I just know it.
I almost derailed gaming with speculation on what religion would be
like in a universe where miracles did happen when people asked for them,
but the discussion foundered on religious people believing in God but
not anything else. (Or something. Where do you go from a position like,
"People in the Middle Ages saw miracles that proved the existance of God
everywhere, so a universe with working divine magic would be like
that."?) Probably for the best that we stopped, really.
Food: Ken fed us pasta with salmon and peas, sauteed
mystery squash, and mushrooms! All hail Ken!

Ayse's kitties are almost as adorable as my kitties!

other jobs applied for: 3. Expected rejection rate (including

Suzuka.

Work: Jobs futilely applied for: 2. One of them even
had an on-line questionnaire as part of the application process, so I could
display my suckage in detail right up front!
Visual Entertainments: Dave is back for Wednesday Night
Whatever! We watched the first episode of the new Dr Who,
which everyone seemed to appreciate.
I still remember Gretchen's comment from when we first watched the
entire season in a huge marathon at Chrisber and Christy's: "They have
chemistry! The Doctor can't have chemistry!"

Work: This afternoon I interviewed at Playdom, which is conveniently located in
Mountain View a few blocks from the train station. So far I have not
seen any ninjas sent to expunge the stain on Playdom's honor, but then I
wouldn't, would I?

5 July 2009 - Sunday
Gaming: No gaming today. I forget why. Probably
someone with kids is responsible.
Visual Entertainments: First disc of
Baccano!, which is about gangsters and alchemists in 1930s
New York, with about 6512956291 characters, most of whom are stark
raving mad.
Silly Computer Games: I guess I should play a couple
of the games made by the company I'm interviewing with tomorrow.
[ . . . ]
Wow, I really suck at poker.
Cats:
I let the cats out on the balcony again. I even tried putting Aspen out
there, but she didn't want to go anywhere I wanted to put her, and by
the time she was starting to wonder if it might be fun, I had to put
Marmalade on a time-out from the netting again. Maybe next time.
Writing: Check.
No gaming by Jeremy (Mon Jul 6 22:01:35 2009)
Hey, we were here. With enough sugar to kill several moose, even. It was Dave's fault, if I recall correctly.
Re: No gaming by Trip (Mon Jul 6 23:09:42 2009)
Oh, right, it was someone who has a parent who was responsible! I knew it was something like that!
I'm not sure that sugar that kills moose is what I'm looking for in gaming munchies anyway.

Random Pre-Planned Encounters: The
fabled Jules and Yi-Mei and their spawn Owen.
Gaming: Everyone else's games are more fun than
mine.
Food: Barbecue feast at Neil and Stacy's! Grilled corn!
Mustardy potato salad! Fungus with cheese! Marinated pork! Sugar snap peas!
Anecdotes! Sugar-powered toddlers!
Visual Entertainments: From Neil's Mom's parking
spot, the fireworks were far away, but several shows and some random
explosions were easily visible.

Work: HOLIDAY.
Visual Entertainments: Finished 009-1.
It was true to the genre.
Cats:
When Marith came over to insufficiently criticize my network, we let the
cats (well, Marmalade and Ghirardelli) out on the balcony with
supervision. Marmalade was extremely interested in everything out there,
but there was no disguising the fact that the netting is made out of
string crossed with string so eventually we had to shoo him back inside.
Still, it has been demonstrated that the balcony is actually of interest
to cats!

Work: Interviews confirmed for 13:30 on Monday: 1.
Visual Entertainments: First two episodes of the
last disc of 009-1. Why yes, being James Bond does suck,
even if you're a female cyborg with [SPOILER]s.
Cats:
The power went out this afternoon, so I had no Internets to distract me
from the project of putting up netting on the balcony to make it
suitable for indoors cats.
I think I better stick to software.

1 July 2009 - Wednesday
Work: Technical questionnaires filled out: 1.
Interviews scheduled for next week: 1.
Food: Ayse and Ken made me eat pasta with red sauce
and chicken strips! The fiends!
Gaming: Despite Dave being out of town, we played
Earthdawn anyway. Now we have a moral dilemma: murder the poor old
wizard in his sleep, or leave him to run out the clock on his natural
life span and hope the horror bound to his life force doesn't talk him
into committing suicide?
Silly Computer Games: Usually the quest rewards in
NPPAngband are
kind of lame, but this time it gave me an item for the one slot I didn't
already have something good in, which had all of the last three resistances
I was missing. 5C0R3!
Cats:
Marmalade is so cute when he hides in the fan box, although possibly he
is even cuter when his tail sticks out.
