No 13th Age
this week. Brooks is out, Kelsey is sick, and Mike is too good for
us.
Fourth in the "Harmony Black" series of secret FBI agents vs demons and
politicians, Cold Spectrum (Craig Schaefer) finally lets the
main characters discover the Awful Truth, and also shoot a lot of people
who deserve it. This is a phase change for the series, so it could either
end here on a high note or continue along the new course. Unfinalized
villains suggest the latter.
"Waiting on a Bright Moon" (JY Yang) feels a little like Ninefox
Gambit, but it's explicitly magic, and queerness is a big deal
instead of gender being completely optional. It was pretty good, and I
will look for more by this author.

It has been too long since I read a James Alan Gardner book, but now
there is All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault,
featuring superheroes vs libertarian vampires! Okay, it's more complicated
than that, but therefore even cooler. Also in the afterward, the author
admits to being a Champions player.
All The Pretty Little Horses (Mira Grant) is a prequel to
the "Newsflesh" trilogy. Despite the title, no one is actually eaten by
a horse; in fact, it's kind of heartwarming. As much as a zombie story
can be, anyway.

Work is not so bad after a vacation, it's mostly the getting up that

I stayed up too late writing (very inefficiently), but still only made

Today I accomplished nothing useful except to see
Thor: Ragnarok, and that was questionable. I mean, I liked
it, but it didn't make very much sense. On the other hand, Cate
Blanchett Murders Everyone, Slinkily. Valkyrie is pretty cool, too.

Our hosts had to go to Reno early in the morning to cheer
on Kate at a band event (with a football game attached?), so there was
no reason to keep hanging around (except in Jus's case) and we made a
somewhat timely departure.
On the way back, Ken and I consumed
episodes 2.4-2.8 of Alice Isn't Dead. Well,
that's a lot of doom!
All my kitties are still fuzzy, because Marith checked in on
them.

After sleeping approximately forever, I felt better, although still
kind of mucusy.
We went to Al's FLGS, but roleplaying games consist of 45%
Pathfinder, 45% other editions of D&D, and 10% other. Bah!
Ken bought Roll for the
Galaxy, which is like Race
for the Galaxy as a worker-placement game with piles of custom dice,
and we played it a few times. I like it about a million times more than
Race, possibly because it's easier to get Produce and Ship phases going
(which I'm sure means it's boring to Serious Gamers, but pblt). Dave and
Ken still win, because some things are constants, but I don't necessarily
lose embarrassingly all the time.
At Ken's instigation, Dave and Al and Robert made characters for
Blades in the Dark.
(So did Ken and I, although his crazed plan is that we will alternate
running, so our characters would each only be there half the time.) I
wonder what a good mission for a Shadows crew would be?
Many leftovers fell in battle this day.

Happy Thanksgiving! This year, as always, I am thankful for my people.
Because they are the best people, even ones who are not here right now.
There was so much food. I did not actually eat too much, though.
After dinner I had a stupid argument with Ken and then hid until I
went to sleep for about 14 hours.

No work, only Zuul! I mean zoom! Also episodes 2.1-2.3 of Alice Isn't Dead. America is a creepy place.
Also mucus.
We all arrived safely in Roseville, where everyone was also doing well.
We played Lords
of Waterdeep and I was terrible at it, but oh well.

hand, we see space opera (malevolent Ancients subtype) action, and

Ugh, Monday. But at least our new conference rooms are done!
Into the Drowning Deep (Mira Grant) is the sequel to
Rolling in the Deep, about the followup expedition to the
horrible place of horror. So, in some ways it is very similar, but in
others not. (Humans do seem capable of learning, a little, sometimes.)
There is a specific plot thread, and something that's been used to taunt
the reader twice, that makes me think there needs to be a third story,
but I have no idea whether this will come to pass.

No gaming today, since we know ahead of time we are missing 2/6

hoarseness and mucosity.
Hey, do you think that might be related to my inability to write more

Between cleaners and no brain, I did not get much done today, but I
did go to anime (where we had no Marith).
- My Little Pony 24: Today's moral: don't be paranoid and
jealous. Or if you must, be a competent plotter.
- The Ancient Magus' Bride OAV 2-3: I found this to be a
little cryptic, but apparently it was clear as glass to everyone else,
so probably I'm just dim. Anyway, it was very pretty, and also tragic.
- Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions 4-5: Now we know the
shape of Class Rep's terrible past! Napping Girl seems to be the
only one not involved, but perhaps we will find out more about her.
Please note: this show is adorable.
As you might expect (well, okay, be unsurprised by) from Jim Hines,
Terminal Alliance is about heroic janitors. In space! There
is alien skullduggery, intrigue, betrayal, certain doom, uncertain doom,
mystery, space warfare, and no romance. Don't mess with janitors, man.

Malice of Crows (Lila Bowen) is the third book about
everyone's favorite shapeshifting transcowboy (cowtransboy?) monster
hunter. It is pretty much a direct follow-on to the second book, and would
not stand well on its own, but that just means you should read the other
two books first.
I can't believe it took me this long to realize that liking PbtA
games' "play to find out what happens" might be related to the way I write
without planning out ahead of time.

My 13th Age
character is still dead, probably until the 15th Age. (When we finish this
campaign, maybe we should do Microscope for the
14th Age and Interregnum, and then run a game in the resulting 15th Age
(using Dungeon
World, of course).) The other PCs engaged in elven politics, swapped
some characters around, and then set out to save the world.

For Marithday (observed), we went
bowling.
Bowling is okay, but bowling alleys are very loud. I think Jus and Nonny
liked it, though, which was the main goal.
Later, we had pot roast and vegetables and brussels sprouts from a
brussels tree and fully-baked rolls, and cake for lizards!
- Steven Universe 5.5-7: Jus has very big feelings about
what Lapis did!
- Durarara!!x2 3.12: The end! Mostly, anyway, although there are
lots of unresolved bits and it was not entirely satisfying.
- Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions 3: Augh, there's two
of them! But I would totally join the Napping Club.
- Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 3: Flashback to WWII, which does a
little more to anchor this in time.
- Steven Universe 5.8-10: Kevin somehow managed to end up being
useful! Pearl could not say things! Lion made a choice, but it's not clear
what that choice was! Now we have to wait a million years for more
episodes!

No work today, because we get All the Holidays off.
Henchgirl (Kristen Gudsnuk) is a reasonably amusing story
of a 20-something supervillain and her complicated life with a gang that
doesn't appreciate her and roommates that want her to pay rent and
relatives that have completely different ideas what she should be doing
with her life. It feels like it is mocking the superhero genre more than
making fun of it, though, if you know what I mean. (To be fair, the
superhero genre is pretty ridiculous.)

Ken was not too sick to run 13th Age this

Now that everyone uses networked devices to tell time, Daylight
Spending Day causes much less confusion. But it still comes in the part of
the year where getting out of bed is unappealing.
We had no Deirdre or Edie for
PAD&D5,
but gamed anyway because we are just that mean!
The Heroines of Red Larch are thwarted in their desire to assault the
[SPOILER] by a revelation from the Crystal Dragon sending them to Yartar.
Rimardo's former patron wants to experiment on Lam to find why she can
still [SPOILER] when no one else can, but she demurs. Mara and Hazlerae do
stay behind, because some information could be gained from them, and they
are NPCs this session.
Along the way, the Heroines are attacked by a [SPOILER] and his pet
rock, sent futilely by [SPOILER] to wreak a terrible revenge. That sort of
thing happens a lot when you're saving the world.
In Yartar, they find [SPOILER]s trying to subvert the faith of the Crystal
Dragon by preaching a deviant theology that spreads despair among
worshippers of the gods! The Heroines attend one of these sermons to
gather information, but Lamthanc is so offended by the preacher's calumnies of
the gods that she has to smite them with Moonbeam, and the inevitable fight
breaks out.
Lamthanc successfully tanks the majority of the heretics, while the
rest of the team concentrates on the preacher and their [SPOILER].
Miraculously, only one or two bystanders are killed, and none of them by
the Heroine's actions. The preacher and the toughest enemy escape, but are
probably not going to be a problem again, and the city is not destroyed.

I did not get up and ready to face the day before the cleaners arrived,
and then there had to be scheduling confusion about Marith's birthday
bowling, which was eventually cancelled. There was pretty much no writing.
Marith came to anime, although she did not help feast on soup because
she still fears the germs.
- My Little Pony 23: So basically the entire show, or at
least the entire cast, is Rainbow Dash's fault. Okay, I'd buy that.
- Durarara!!x2 3.11: A lot of shounen anime seems to come
down to Philosophy To The Death.
- Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 2: Flashback, to when the
cantankerous old master was a stuck-up young apprentice!
- Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions 1-2: This is
surprisingly cute for how goofy it is. Something about the character
designs and interactions reminds all of us of 90s anime (in a good
way).

My thyroid has been biopsied. It was a little uncomfortable, but not
too agonizing, probably because the needles didn't have to go too deep.
Apparently the samples have to be inspected by a human with a microscope
and appropriate training, but hopefully the results will be in before my
doctor goes on vacation next week.
The Murders of Molly Southbourne (Tade Thompson) is pretty
darn creepy, or maybe creepier than that. Hopefully his books will be
