31 December 2019 - Tuesday

I did a little shopping and only got moderately confused by the new bus route. That's enough for a holiday, right?

Earl and Cat bailed on us, so it was just the four of us grownups and Jus, and we had Korean delivery instead of fondue. But we played hearts and Small World and Jus did not melt down from tiredness and even came in second in Small World! I wouldn't call it a party, but it was definitely better than sitting home alone!

Well, that's it for 2019. Maybe in 2020, Nazis will get what's coming to them.

Read:

  • Before The Broken Star (Emily R King): A girl with a clockwork heart, vengeance, fairy tales, death at sea, all the classics.
  • Dark Pacts & Ancient Secrets (Martin Killmann): Third-party classes for 13th Age: monster, psionic, swordmage, warlock, fateweaver, savage (because barbarians aren't barbaric enough?), all pretty much what they say on the tin, and probably kind of OP. Also some feats and talents for existing classes, and some more magic items. I want to like 13th Age, but it just has too many things to keep track of for not enough benefit from each one, and also it's D&D.

29 December 2019 - Sunday

The bus routes all changed yesterday, because reasons. The one that goes roughly north-south past my apartment, down to Ayse and Ken's, is pretty much the same, but the one that goes perpendicularly, which I ride in one direction to get to the train in the morning, and in the other direction to get to grocery and books on weekends, has been abolished. Fortunately, a nearby bus has been extended to cover the part of the route that I care about, and it runs both later every evening and more frequently on weekends, so I win.

Shopping is about the only thing I have managed to do today, though.

The kitten I was thinking of adopting, who had languished unclaimed for months, has now been adopted. This is sad, but I am sure she is very beloved in her new home.

Ugh, on call. Hopefully the customers will remain quiet.

For additional holiday celebration, I went with Ayse and Ken and Jus and Nonny to infinite sushi and adorable kittens. I got on-called during lunch, but was able to tell the customer to go away and finish doing what we said the first time.

The kittens are very adorable. Orange Boy Kitten Jingle was very snuggly, but also rambunctious and made me miss Marmalade. Dark Girl Kitten Cammie allowed pettins on her own terms. But the most splendid cat was Apple, who Ayse and Jus are trying very hard to get me to adopt. She likes lounging atop her cat tree and being tallest and coolest, so she might even get along with Aspen.

I would have met more kitties, but we could only stay an hour before Ken's allergies started getting to him.

The customers did not return before I was able to hand things over to the next shift. Insert dancing llama icon here.

Read:

  • Eromanga-Sensei vol 1 (Tsukasa Fushimi, rin, Kanzakihiro): Orphaned high-school light novellist discovers that his hikikomori little stepsister is actually the illustrator for his novels. Incestuous innuendo ensues, although the male lead doesn't seem to actually be a sleaze.
  • Fruits Basket Another vol 3 (Natsuki Takaya): Yep, Sawa's mother really sucks. But now she has friends, so perhaps things will be okay. I still didn't like it nearly as much as the original, although it is good in its own way.

Hardly any customers today, except the one who kept sending me the log messages about his typos, asking me to debug them. That was good, because I was very stupid today.

It's like Monday and Thursday at the same time, plus I'm the only one of my team in the office so I seem to be ending up with all the cases. Which is not itself bad, I guess, but it's so Monday.

Also there's still no lunch delivery, so I ate most of a bag of pita chips instead of anything healthy.

  • Silver Spoon vol 12 (Hiromu Arakawa): Hey, that is a plan! With coconspirators and everything! Also, Cheese Girl goes to France.
  • Thirsty Sword Lesbians Beta 0.4 (April Kit Walsh): This game is 1000% about feelings and roughly 0% about whether a scimitar or a longsword does more damage. I mean, there is a move for fencing with someone to hurt them, but there are way more moves for seducing them or trying to find out their tragic backstory or supporting them emotionally. The playbooks are all centered around an inner emotional conflict (grand destiny vs living your own life, traditional values vs living your own life, having monster friends vs having human friends, etc). You can even declare yourself smitten with someone and it has mechanical effects! This is a very early version, but apparently it's been picked up by Evil Hat so it will get proper editing and playtesting and such. Sadly, I am completely unqualified to play this game, not just for the obvious reason, but because the only feelings I know anything about are anxiety, disappointment, and existential despair.

Nonsense. At the very least you have extensive experience with the feelings of being affectionately worn out by small children, loved/tolerated by your cat, annoyed by your flatmate and oppressed by poking.

This time I only slept in until 10. Surely this will not cause any problems tomorrow when I have to go back to work again, right?

Marith also stopped sleeping at an apppropriate hour and roasted up a bunch of squash and then we took a box of celebratory items over to Ayse and Ken's for Xmas dinner! Dave was not there, because he was off being a Dave, but Earl and Cat were there, and we feasted upon the capon and many other tasty things and were as festive as children allowed.

I didn't sleep in until noon! ...quite. I went to lunch at the new Thai place because the burger place with five kinds of Diet Dr Pepper is closed, but the pad thai was pretty bland. I think I may be too snooty to eat there.

Also I noodled around on the Internet until my brain came out, but in between I wrapped some presents. I think of wrapping presents as a huge chore that I'm terrible at, but it's really not that bad.

Atlantic City Rollers fell through because Rachel is full of germs, so instead I went over to Ken's place and we played Gloomhaven. Still, we got enough money that I was able to buy four enhancements and retire my murder rat. We have unlocked the Summoner, who is apparently terrible, so maybe I'll play that next. Or the paladin of solar flame and death, but that risks being actually useful.

As anyone who is smarter than my character could have predicted, the apparently-friendly elf sold us out to the Lunars, framing us for murder after pretending to trade us an iron greave for a robin's egg and mystical Trickster secrets. Now most of us have been arrested by flying Lunar bird-weirdos, except the monk and the bandit, who are lurking in the woods. I suppose we could have tried to fight them, but D&D.

Specific princesses, like the princess of maple syrup, or the princess of lasers, in a cartoon world of awesome that they have to protect. Brooks kindly gave me a lift part of the way, but there was confusion, so we were kind of late, and also I had failed at ordering an adequate amount of Thai food, so in many ways the evening was less than ideal. However, I had more fun playing 13G than usual, perhaps because there were no fight scenes. It is not unlike Numenera in some ways, it even describes active threats with a single number. However, it is better than Numenera because it adds an adjective, which might be roleplaying (L2, curious), mechanical (L1, paralytic), atmospheric (L4, howling), or just weird (L8, time-spliced). Also UVG is better because in Numenera, everything you meet or find or see is completely unique and bizarre, but in the UVG, there are classes of things. The vomes here might be different from the vomes at the last place you stopped, but they're all creepy, bug-ridden biomechanical monsters; the stuckforce here might be pinning an ancient structure to the sky while the stuckforce there is being used as load-bearing planets by the locals, but it's all still the detritus of ages of Tenser's floating disk and wall of force. Omens were unclear, but it turns out Dave was up for running SCRPG today despite spending days and days in Granite Bay with Thanksgiving food.

Now that Mav is gone, the first order of business is to secure her extradimensional house so that it doesn't eat any squatters. It may be too late, as the place has been tossed, but the Rollers decide that the best way to keep anyone else from coming to grief in the house is to occupy it themselves. Surely this cannot go wrong! After a couple of weeks, they even stop getting lost (as long as they stay out of the attic) and start to make friends with the tiny people who live in the walls and sneak food from the kitchn (the same ones that worked in Mav's impossible weapons).

After the disruption of Mav, the local mob bosses want to restore their power, so they try recruiting the Mechanic back to their side. A direct appeal doesn't get anywhere, so they try leaning on his friends the vintage cars, first roughing one up and then kidnapping several outright. Naturally the Rollers have to rescue them, despite the goons with cutting arcs holding the poor cars hostage! Since cars aren't that fussed about physical modifications, this doesn't work as well as the mobsters hope, even when they overload the arcs into plasma guns and set the garage on fire. Victory: the Rollers.

The goons involved in that fight don't have much morale, but mob lawyers are getting the ones who were put away on Mav's escapades off on some kind of mind controll/duress technicality, and they want to recoup their losses, so they try holding up a casino. (Casinos get held up a lot in this town.) Despite having the last of the stock of Mav's weapons, and two transforming mecha suits diguised as vintage cars, this doesn't go well for them as Moth bursts in through the skylight to draw their fire, Nighthawk and Anonymouse pick them off from the shadows, and Feathers and the Mechanic charge with guns zapping and engines revving. The Rollers are victorious again!
