Previously, in Trip's Life...

31 May 2020 - Sunday

Getting up was much less efficient than I had planned, but I wasn't the last one to log in to Roll20, so there!

The Atlantic City Rollers start a new collection with another invasion of Feathers's lab! This time, it's two velociraptor soldiers in combat armor and half a dozen amorphous blobs, some of them bubbling with half-formed organs, that appear from nowhere. Despite Moth's new focus on leadership, the heroes don't manage to avoid splitting the blobs until both of the velociraptors are down (one eaten) and the lab is full of goo, but then they get a handle on the situation and clean them up with the aid of some valve degreaser, a poorly-controlled fire, and Anonymouse's ability to beat the snot out of literally everyone.

The velociraptor that Moth pulled out of the goo pulls through with the aid of advanced dinosaur medicines, and is able to explain what's going on. Apparently after Feathers bailed on the future, the aliens that the aliens who recruited the velociraptors were fighting, were infiltrated/subsumed/eaten by the blobs, and then the velociraptor's aliens, and then the velociraptors. Red Fang 13 alone has survived to bring this message to the renegade scientist Veela! He brings plans for the time machine, but limited knowledge about when the blob problem started, so Feathers and the Rollers will need to not only build multiple (one-use) time machines, but search the next thousand years of histories for the point of change. I guess we know where the rest of this collection is going!

The rest of the issue is taken up with "sourcing" time machine parts without leaving obvious traces for historians, grilling other time travellers for information on future blobs, beseeching the aid of the great god Pazuzu, and of course assembling the time machine out of diamonds and caffeine, molecule by molecule.

The title of this issue is "What Happened to My Future?!".

That's about all I managed today. I tried going for a walk in the afternoon, but it was hot and gross out because some idiot moved to California.

The cleaners came and cleaned, with masks, but I still kind of feel like I should be mailing them a check every four weeks and telling them to stay away. But I doubt most people are doing that, so would it reduce their risk meaningfully? I don't even know.

Also grocery shopping, which made me unreasonably grumpy because other people are involved at every step from planning onward. Also I think we're shopping like Marith is still cooking regularly even though she rarely cooks, which is why our fridge is so wrong.

Marith ran for Jus this time, continuing the No Thank You, Evil! adventure where we uncovered the secrets of the haunted house (it was a real estate scam). Finally we made it to the Vale of Windchimes, past the defensive mist, and solved the gatekeeper's Peanut Riddle. The gatekeeper promised the dressmaker that we would be the funniest entrants ever in the dance contest, so after we made a delivery to the most difficult customer, she lent us finery for the party, and then there was Lizard Trouble. And dancing, but mostly Lizard Trouble. The novelty value of lizards flinging off their dresses and dancing on them overcame any technical demerits, and finally we got teleported, allegedly to see the library abuser we have been hunting all this time.

I need to remember to use my headset next time, because when Marith is facing me and shouting into her mic, the echo is pretty bad.

Also I need to remember to make up some Hogwarts plot for next week.

Mike said 13th Age Glorantha was going to be away team, but in fact it was mostly him making us roll dice to play the Runequest seasonal resource allocation game. Eventually we did get to the away team, who got decoyed and entrapped by their leader's nemesis. Great.

I got more Chinese takeaway because Marith was dead from work again, but this time I got stuff I could share.

Oh, actually I had to get up even earlier this morning, for the company meeting! Looks like WFH is extended until at least the end of June, but otherwise everything is great.

Marith didn't want to cook, but she gave me like two sentences of instructions and a link to a recipe that contradicted them, so I cooked rosemary chicken apples onions together and produced... cooked stuff. I'm pretty sure that could have worked better.

I tried to eat it with pesto gnocchi, but the gnocchi had gone weird and mealy. Oh well.

I technically woke up almost early enough for work, so surely tomorrow will be no problem, right? Especially if I go to bed at a reasonable hour, which is definitely guaranteed to happen.

Words: Another 400ish, although this was harder than the past couple. That seems to be about the most I can do in a sitting, anyway, so if I feel able to set a daily quota, it will need to be less than that.

I slept in forever, because tomorrow is a holiday so I can practice waking up for the work week then, right? Never mind the dreams about sleeping too much or not being able to wake up correctly.

I wasted almost the entire day, and then Marith was dead from work, so I didn't even see any She-Ra.

Does getting takeaway from the good Chinese place count as an accomplishment? I want them to stay in business, but they gave me a huge soup on the house, so I don't know if I'm even helping them by spending my money!

I had to be on call today from 13:30 to 19:30, so I begged off running for Jus.because it's more disruptive for the GM to get pulled away than a player. Jus agreed to run, and her character got revealed to be not actually a Sailor Scout, but a Galaxy Sister, and the more powerful Galaxy Sister, with a strong (yet hotly denied) tendency to turn evil. Also apparently there are ancient ruins in Arkansas, which has sunken into the sea. I feel like I should say something, but as a boring old guy, it's probably not my place.

Kelsey managed to be late to 13th Age Glorantha despite lockdown, but being sick is a good excuse, especially in these times! (It doesn't seem to be the Rona, though.)

This session, after being scolded for his attempted manipulativeness by the Humakti, Brogandi recruits a convenient nearby Earth priestess (who looks like an adorable grandma but may be secretly terrifying) to help and then the group performs the ritual to hide and confuse the dead so that the Lunar magicians can't call up the ghosts of the slain Lassodeg Lions and find out who to massacre. This is both onerous and gross, but works surprisingly well considering that Brogandi's mom, who actually knows and is qualified to perform the ritual, never shows up. This puts off the problem of the dead Lunars until the end of everyone's life, which should be fine, right?

When the group gets back to the steading, they find Brogandi's mom, who has just returned from her own trading expedition with news that the Black Oak clan has put out a bounty on him so he shouldn't go to the mark-- oh. But since the Lions got killed instead of delivering the wegild to the Black Oaks, Brogandi probably shouldn't leave the tula for a while anyway.

Level UP! And next week back to the Away Team, who also get to be level 2.

I got up early enough to go grocery shopping, but they had no distilled water, only "purified". They did have more diet Snapple, though, so I can continue my dissolute habits.

Dave decided there was actually at least one more issue in this collection, so we only had two collection bonuses each to get the Atlantic City Rollers through "Apotheosis"!

The helpful historian of magic who sent the team into Moth's own personal hell so she could talk a demon into becomng a god (see last issue) points out that Pazuzu is now in a somewhat tenuous position, metaphysically speaking, and could probably use some help establishing their new position in conceptual space. Since the Rollers' base, stolen from Mav, is already pretty conceptual, it seems like a good place to set up a shrine. Feathers and the Mechanic mostly bicker like children with machine shops, but Anonymouse and Nighthawk produce some very nice art in the various workshops, and Moth invents and performs an aerial dance in honor of Pazuzu in the conservatory (which has skylights). Will and intent is enough to bring the quasi-real house into alignment with the Semi-Platonic Realm where gods of abstract concepts dwell, and an door appears in the wall!

Perhaps the door isn't that innocuous, because it leads to the borders of the Semi-Platonic Realm, where two ancient gods of war guard the concept of a sacred torii gate from entities of corruption. Moth tries to persuade them that the smart thing to do is let Pazuzu (who is apparently hiding out in her soul) renounce his corrupt ways and strengthen the forces of non-corruption. Nanaja seems to be considering it, but unfortunately Tu is the god of frontal assaults, and the fight breaks out.

Nanaja and Tu and their spirits of war are tough, but no match for ray guns and hydraulic fists, and eventually are beaten down. Before Moth can take Pazuzu through the gateway, though, another group shows up with strong opinions on whether that should happen: Pazuzu's old coworkers from Hell. The Rollers are kind of battered by this time, so the demons are able to extract Pazuzu and try to make off with him, but Anonymouse clobbers all the lesser demons, and Nighthawk fills the leaders full of arrows. Is it finally time for Pazuzu to take their place among the gods?

It is! But first the Rollers must enter the Semi-Platonic Realm and prepare that place (semi-metaphorically), while trying to avoid being pulled apart into their component concepts. Feathers and the Mechanic build a helicarrier, Nighthawk and Anonymouse fill it with a museum of human flight through the ages, and Moth links Pazuzu to the Roman gods, whose names are now places humans want to fly to.

Amazing victory!

Jus wanted to play more Hogwarts, so we did, although she was not super-attentive. This session, Bella crawled around in secret tunnels, met a boy who everyone says is Voldemort's son and his two-headed snake, found the kitchens and the house elves that toil there, got accused of being sweet on that Potter kid and challenged to a duel, won a duel, and did no homework.

13th Age Glorantha seems to be happening more reliably in our present dystopia than when we all travelled freely-- oh, never mind, I understand.

The last scenario for the home team was obviously "Send Tricksters, Swords, and Money", so this one had to be "Werelions of Sartar" and so it was! We finally managed to pin down the lion-themed Lunars and even though one of them transformed horribly (and his hair was perfect), we were able to keep them from getting away alive to let the empire know we had killed them. Now we have to stop their ghosts from spilling the beans, which we can do but only in a way that may cause intra-party conflict with the Humakti.

It's time for Atlantic City Rollers and I wasn't even the last person to log on this time!

It's a good thing, too, since this issue was all about Moth! After getting her powers partially drained by the alien glop last issue, and finding out about the YouTube channel of demonic transcendental meditation the issue before that, she was worried to the point of nightmares, but couldn't contact the demon who she gets her powers from. With the help of a passing historian of magic, the entire team goes on an astral journey to break through multiple circles of Moth's fears and insecurities and reach... an empty cubicle in the primordial chaos with an "out to lunch" sign. With more willpower than sense, the Rollers push onward and bust into Hell itself in search of answers!

Finally, Moth is face-to-face with Pazuzu, to hear his "I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further" speech, and reject it. Based on a thought she had afte the historian talked about Pazuzu trying to gain more power, she makes the pitch that he should abandon Hell and become a god!

This gets security called on them, but Moth keeps making her case while everyone else holds off the demons, and once the demonic auditor has been hydraulic-pressed by the Mechanic and cannot rat him out, Pazuzu concedes that being out from under Hell's thumb might not be so bad.

Victory!

Fortunately SCRPG explicitly allows for radiation accidents, so I can change Moth's powers to be appropriate to the god of flight, once I figure out what that should be. She already had the Mystic power source, but maybe I should change it to Higher Power and see how that works?
