The Remailer's Dead, Jim

It got SPAMMED to death, so I shut it down back in June. Remailers can provide a real service to the community, but they can also be abused, and some sleaze abused it in a way my current code can't block. I may bring it back up some day with better, or different technology.

You can get a list of currently operating remailers, and lots of other information, at anon.efga.org.

Anonymous Pamphlet Distribution Service

The U.S. Supreme Court has recently reconfirmed what we knew all along, that people in the U.S. have the right to anonymously distribute pamphlets, handbills, etc. This distribution service supports your right to a free, anonymous press by removing address information your mail system may have added to your messages and re-transmitting them. If you want to publish unpopular political opinions, blow the whistle on your favorite government or company, or distribute your latest poetry without tarnishing your academic reputation, remailers let you do it. Or if you just want to post things on the net without getting spammed, remailers let you do that too.

For anonymous remailers that let people reply to you, there WERE Julf Helsingius's anon.penet.fi server ( help@anon.penet.fi ) and alpha.c2.org ( info or Private Idaho, a really cool privacy tool that makes alpha much easier to use.) NOT ANY MORE - ALPHA GOT SPAMMED TO DEATH, AND ANON.PENET.FI WAS FORCED TO IDENTIFY A USER TO THE SCIENTOLOGISTS SO JULF SHUT IT DOWN. The remailer at anon.efga.org has some of that capability.

This remailer uses Matt Ghio's code from ftp://utopia.hactic.nl/ -- you can get an easy-to-install copy of the source for Unix by clicking original or my modified version.

This remailer accepts mail encrypted with PGP if you format it right. [You can get the Public Key below.] Encryption software can be found outside the US at ftp.ox.ac.uk and ftp.funet.fi. RSA and RC4 in 3-4 lines of perl can be found at Adam Back's Home Page

Logging Policy

Here's my old remailer policy; since the remailer's long dead, it no longer applies, and in fact I may get bouncegrams logged if you send to it :-)

I do not keep remailer logs for the purposes of tracking users. However, the mail system on idiom.com may keep logs; one function of a remailer is to obscure the time connections between input and output, so these logs will not tell you much, and the system adminstrator will not provide them. Also, bouncemail ends up in my mailbox; I normally delete it unread unless the Subject: line looks like a request for help on my remailer, in which case I (rarely and unpredictably) may send you help. (Obviously an anonymous remailer that tries very hard to forget who you are will not send bouncemail or delivery notices back to you, so you'll just have to guess whether it was delivered.) I do keep some data for short periods of time for debugging, and the remailer keeps statistical data as well. You can get a list of statistics on remailer usage by sending mail to the remailer with

Abuse Policy
If you don't want to receive anonymous mail, send me a message, and I will add your email address to the block list. Please do not use this remailer to spam people. I consider the following to be inappropriate use of this anonymous remailer, and will take steps to prevent anyone from doing any of the following:

Sending messages intended primarilly to be harassing or annoying.
Use of the remailer for any illegal purpose. While there are a large number of things the US government has made laws against that aren't any of their business, they are still a large well-armed bunch of people, and I do not want to create trouble for my network service provider.
Harassing my service provider in any way. If you want to complain, whether about the behavior of users or the mere existence of this service, or especially about problems getting the remailer to work, send complaints to me, at my address, not to root or postmaster.
